PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin Review: A Cheaper Rotating Litter Box

PetSafe's SmartSpin copies the rotating-globe idea at $399.99, against $699 for a Litter-Robot 4. It has a 6-liter sealed drawer and a low 12 inch entry, but tuning, litter choice and Wi-Fi need care.

6.9 /10

Our verdict

The SmartSpin is the most sensible rotating litter box for people who find a Litter-Robot too expensive. A sealed 6-liter drawer, a low entry and app weight tracking cover the basics at $399.99. Expect more tuning than the premium box needs: a longer clean delay, a good clumping litter, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, no battery backup and, in testing, litter that soils the globe faster. A decent single-cat box, not a Litter-Robot match.

Best for
Single-cat homes that want a rotating box without the top price

Every self-cleaning litter box is judged against one product, and it is not the one in the box. Buyers look at the Litter-Robot 4, wince at the $699 it starts at on Whisker's site, and go looking for something rounder and cheaper. PetSafe's ScoopFree SmartSpin is the box they usually land on. It is $399.99 on PetSafe.com, and it is easy to see why it earned the nickname "the Litter-Robot dupe".

Nickname aside, it is a different machine, and the differences are in the setup, not on the spec sheet.

The design: a globe on a diet

Like a Litter-Robot, the SmartSpin senses when your cat leaves, waits, and rotates to sift clumps into a sealed drawer. PetSafe says that drawer is 6 liters, holds up to two weeks of waste, and has an integrated deodorizer, with a smooth, groove-free interior that wipes clean once you take it apart.

The entry is the best thing about it. The lip is 12 inches off the ground, lower than the Litter-Robot 4, which comes with a step. A reviewer comparing the two said the SmartSpin's low entry suits seniors, and PetSafe lists cats up to 25 lb. One tester, however, called 12 inches awkward for a very old or mobility-limited cat, so the answer depends on how stiff your cat is. The same site gave a 2.5 lb minimum.

Set it up properly or it will disappoint you

Out of the box, our reading of the independent testing is that the SmartSpin needs a little tuning. The big one is the Clean Delay, adjustable from 1 to 60 minutes. A long-term reviewer found the default of 3 minutes too short for clumps to set, and settled on 7 to 10. Rotating too early makes a mess of the globe.

Litter matters as well. PetSafe says any clumping litter works but recommends a premium one, and the reviewer saw budget litter soil the globe faster. They also noted the globe holds about 1.5 inches of litter, a limit for cats that dig. Waste collects in the globe faster than in a Litter-Robot, in that tester's experience.

Noise gets a mild verdict: a subtle sound as the globe returns to position, noticeable but not alarming.

What the app does, and does not

The PetSafe Pet Companion app tracks weight and visits and sends alerts. PetSafe says Wi-Fi must be 2.4 GHz, and a reviewer needed several attempts to connect at first. On the control panel you get on-demand cleaning, a child lock, weight-change detection and drawer capacity.

We would call the app a convenience rather than a health tool. Spotting a trend in your cat's weight is useful, and a sudden change is a reason to call your vet, not to rely on a graph. Whisker's app goes deeper, and the same comparison called it a bit overcomplicated.

The honest price comparison

At the list price of $399.99, the SmartSpin costs 57 percent of a Litter-Robot 4 at $699. Reviewers have seen it around $300 to $360 on sale, which is the point at which it becomes a bargain. At full price, you are paying a lot for the lesser machine, and the gap shrinks again if you value the Litter-Robot's reputation for sifting the whole bed.

Running costs are modest. PetSafe supplies liners and two deodorizer packs, and a reviewer measured each pack at about 15 days. You will buy more of both.

One gap worth flagging: there is no battery backup. A reviewer notes the unit stops entirely during a power cut. Waste simply stays in the globe until power returns.

Returns, warranty and the single biggest worry

PetSafe offers a 45-day return on purchases made through its site, minus shipping, with the product in resellable condition, and a one-year limited warranty on defects. One roundup found that 'technological issues' were the most common complaint across its tests, ahead of mechanical ones, and the connectivity notes above fit that pattern. The 45 days is time to find out whether yours behaves.

Who should buy it

Buy it for one cat, ideally a senior or a small one that needs a low entry, if you can find it near $300 to $360 and will use a decent clumping litter. Set the clean delay yourself and keep the app on a 2.4 GHz network.

Skip it if you share the box between several large cats, if you want serious odor control for a small flat, or if you would be buying at full price and could stretch to the Litter-Robot. We rate it 6.9: a capable, lower-cost alternative, held back by a longer list of fiddly details than its price implies.

What we liked, and what we did not

Pros

  • Sealed 6-liter waste drawer is rated for up to 2 weeks of clumps and waste
  • Entry sits 12 inches off the floor, with space for cats up to 25 lb
  • Works with any clumping litter and includes liners and deodorizer packs
  • App tracks weight and visits, and the price is far below a Litter-Robot 4

Cons

  • At $399.99 list it is a little over half a Litter-Robot 4, not a bargain
  • Reviewers found the default 3 minute clean delay too short for clumps
  • Waste builds up in the globe faster than in a Litter-Robot, per one tester
  • No battery backup, and the app needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and sometimes repeat tries
