Litter-Robot 5 Pro Review: Is the Camera Worth $200 More?
The Litter-Robot 5 Pro adds dual cameras and per-cat recognition for $200 over the Litter-Robot 4, plus a Whisker+ subscription. We weigh it against reported bugs.
Our verdict
A capable self-cleaning box with the only per-cat recognition in Whisker's line, but at $899 plus $79.90 a year for Whisker+ it costs about $1,139 over three years, and independent testing reports weekly resets and app glitches. One cat owners should buy the Litter-Robot 4.
- Best for
- Multi-cat homes that want per-cat visit and weight tracking
Whisker sells three current Litter-Robots, and the price ladder is plain: $699 for the Litter-Robot 4, $799 for the Litter-Robot 5, $899 for the Litter-Robot 5 Pro. Everything in the $200 gap between the first and the last comes down to one question. Do you want a camera pointed at your cat's bathroom, and do you trust it to work every day?

What the extra $200 actually buys
Part of the gap is the Litter-Robot 5 itself, not the Pro. Whisker's comparison table puts the middle model at $799 and lists the Pro as a $100 upgrade over that. The 5 brings a larger opening (about 17.5 inches of interior headroom, against roughly 16.5 on the 4), a 30 lb weight limit instead of 25 lb, room for five cats instead of four, and WasteID, which tells urine clumps from solid waste so it can pick a different cycle delay for each.
The Pro adds two things on top: dual 1080p cameras with night vision, and a front-facing camera that Whisker says recognises up to five individual cats. One looks out at the entryway, one watches the inside of the globe.

So the honest framing is this. If you are buying a new Whisker box, the real choice is a camera-less 5 at $799 or a camera 5 Pro at $899. If your cat is under 25 lb and you are happy with the 4, the Pro costs $200 for the camera and the larger frame.
Per-cat tracking, and the subscription it hides behind
The pitch for the Pro is per-cat health data: who visited, when, and how their weight is trending. Here the fine print matters more than the hardware.
Whisker's free app tier gives you five minutes of live streaming a day and recorded events. Facial recognition, unlimited streaming, weight trends and the two-year history sit behind Whisker+. Whisker's membership page offers a 30-day free trial, then $7.99 a month or $79.90 a year. The page also says previously free device features stay free, which is worth knowing if you are wary of a feature being pulled behind a paywall later.

Add it up over three years and the Pro costs about $1,139 with the annual plan, against $699 for a 4 with no recurring fee. That is the figure to hold in your head, not $899.
A sensible reading of the weight data: it is a prompt to look closer, nothing more. A trend line on a scale is not a diagnosis, and a sudden change in how often a cat visits the box is a reason to call your vet, not to trust the chart. We would not buy any litter box primarily as a medical device.
The reliability problem
This is where the Pro loses points. BGR's long-term review found the Pro a step back from the 4 on dependability. Their reported problems:
The scale sensors flagged "extended scale activity" with no cat nearby, which needed a manual reset roughly once a week.
Motor errors appeared even when the globe was not overfilled.
The app sometimes showed the unit as off while it was running, and sent false low-litter and offline alerts.
The camera feed loaded slowly, and the app felt sluggish.
One reviewer is not a verdict on every unit, and Whisker ships software updates, so some of this may have been patched since. But a box whose whole job is to remove chores should not hand you a new one. Owner complaints we found on retail and review sites about onboarding trouble and flaky connectivity point the same way. We rate the Pro on what shipped to buyers, and that is a product still being finished.
Practical details that do not change

Some limits apply across the whole range:
Litter. Use standard clumping clay. Whisker warns that translucent or white crystal litter can throw off the litter-level and drawer-full sensors.
Emptying. The sealed drawer is rated for about 10 days with one cat. Multiple cats shorten that.
Size. The Pro stands about 29.9 inches tall and weighs 29.6 lb empty, so measure the spot first.
Warranty. One year is included; a three-year extension is $149 according to Whisker's page.
Trial. Whisker advertises a 90-day in-home trial, which takes some of the risk out of testing the camera and app on your own Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi. It joins 2.4 or 5 GHz networks. Check signal where the box will sit.
The optional LitterHopper, an automatic refill unit, is $129 on Whisker's page. We would skip it until the base unit proves steady in your home.
Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy the Pro if you live with several cats, want to know which one has stopped using the box, and are comfortable paying for Whisker+ every year. The facial recognition is the one feature no cheaper Whisker model has.
Skip it if you have one cat and mostly want the chore gone. The Litter-Robot 4 at $699, or the camera-less 5 at $799, does that job without a subscription and without the reported glitches. Skip it too if you are in a flat with weak Wi-Fi, or if you have no patience for firmware teething problems.
We think the idea is right and the execution is early. Good hardware, a smart pitch, a price that assumes you will also pay a subscription, and enough bug reports that we would wait for another few software releases before spending $899.
